The Faculty of Basic Education, Arabic Language Department, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Division, organized a specialized scientific seminar entitled
(Pitfalls of the psychological approach in literary criticism).
With the participation of a number of teachers and students.
The seminar, which was lectured by Dr. Dr. Afraa Sami Abboud Al-Daoudi aimed to introduce the psychological approach in literary criticism, its origins, and its most prominent proposals.
The seminar also revealed the most prominent mistakes made by some critics when applying this approach to literary texts.
While explaining the difference between analyzing the author’s personality and analyzing the text itself.
The seminar emphasized on highlighting the limits of the psychological approach and when it is useful and when it is misleading.
The symposium included a discussion of several themes, the first of which was a brief presentation of the theoretical foundations of the psychological approach and its relationship to psychology.
The second theme addressed the pitfalls of this approach in relying on the author’s biography or reading the text in a purely psychological manner.
As for the third axis, it presented some literary application models in which the critics of this approach misused and misapplied it to the texts by excluding the artistic and aesthetic tools of the text.
The symposium recommended the need to emphasize the independence of the literary text from the author in many cases, not to overlook the technical aspects of the text under the pretext of psychological analysis, and to call for a continuous review of critical approaches and blending them with balanced literary analysis.
