Arabic Language Department Lecturer Participates in the Discussion Committee of the Master’s Thesis Entitled: ‘The Poetry of Al-Abbas bin Al-Ahnaf in the Critical Balance’
Prof. Dr. Mutasim Karim Muhaisen, an instructor at the Department of Arabic Language, participated in the defense of the master’s thesis entitled (The Poetry of Al-Abbas bin Al-Ahnaf in the Critical Balance) at the College of Education for Human Sciences / University of Diyala.
The study, which was defended by the student Rasha Zaidan Youssef, and supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Khalid Fayez Yassin, aimed to study the poetry of Al-Abbas bin Al-Ahnaf through the historical method, which is the method capable of clarifying the aesthetics of Al-Abbas’ poetry, which is an important artistic and historical document, suitable for repetition, citation and benefit from it and represents its guaranteed values and artistic features in every time and place.
The study showed that al-Abbas ibn al-Ahnaf is one of the poets whose critics unanimously agreed on the quality of his poetry, its good diction, sweetness, and delicacy in a way that indicates his artistic mastery, poetic maturity, and moral commitment. The most important technical characteristics in his poetry appear in his mention of civilized manifestations in Abbasid society, such as the exchange of gifts, correspondence, and exposure to the civilizational refinement brought about by the luxurious Abbasid civilization. Most of his poetry was in short, poetic stanzas, so there are many critical opinions about the poetry of al-Abbas ibn al-Ahnaf, but most of them – although few – agree that his poetry is one of the wonderful poetry in the Abbasid era, especially in the purpose of virgin ghazal, as al-Abbas often complained, cried and suffered like other virgin poets who preceded him.
