Basic Diyala breaks the silence
Domestic violence on the academic and security discussion table
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the Faculty of Basic Education at the University of Diyala, represented by the Human Rights Unit and the Human Rights Committee in the Arabic Language Department, in cooperation with the Diyala Provincial Police Command and in coordination with the Continuing Education Division and the Media and Government Communications Division, organised a specialised scientific symposium entitled: “Domestic violence: concept and procedure… A Reading of the Social Dimension.”
The seminar was well attended and saw active participation from a number of teachers, students and civil society organisations interested in human rights and social issues.
The seminar, which was moderated by Assistant Professor Ahmed Sadiq Al-Mandalawi and featured presentations by Professor Khawla Ibrahim Ahmed and Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Shaher Jalal Attia (representative of the police leadership), aimed to identify the phenomenon of domestic violence from a comprehensive perspective that combines theoretical definition (concept) with practical and legal measures to deal with it. The seminar sought to raise awareness of the social, psychological and legal risks of violence and to open channels of communication between society and security and legal institutions.
The seminar included a discussion of several key topics: The first topic presented the conceptual definition of domestic violence and its various forms (physical, psychological, economic), and the impact of the social dimension on the prevalence of this phenomenon. The second topic discussed the legal and security measures taken to deal with complaints of domestic violence in Diyala Governorate and the role played by the police leadership in protection and awareness-raising.
The seminar included serious discussions and valuable contributions from participants, which enriched the scientific content and emphasised the importance of concerted community and official efforts to tackle this serious scourge.
