
Towards a safe and inclusive academic environment
Diyala discusses mechanisms for protecting human rights in educational institutions
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the Faculty of Basic Education at the University of Diyala, represented by the Human Rights Unit and in cooperation with the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences and the Continuing Education Division, and in coordination with the Media and Government Communication Division, organised a specialised scientific symposium entitled: ‘Mechanisms for protecting human rights in educational institutions’. With the participation of a number of teachers and students,
the seminar, presented by Assistant Professor Hala Ali Hilal, aimed to achieve a set of fundamental objectives, most notably: enhancing the understanding of employees in educational institutions of the importance of human rights, providing practical tools to protect the rights of students and teaching staff, supporting the creation of a safe and inclusive educational environment that takes into account the needs of all, and strengthening cooperation between educational administrations, regulatory bodies and government agencies.
The seminar included discussions on several key topics: The first topic presented the legal and international framework for human rights and its impact on educational systems. The second topic discussed the duties of educational institutions in protecting students and staff. The third topic reviewed complaint and dispute resolution mechanisms in educational institutions. The fourth topic highlighted the protection of students’ right to privacy of personal data. The fifth topic concluded with an explanation of regulatory policies to protect against violence, harassment and bullying among students.
The seminar included constructive contributions and in-depth discussions by participants, which enriched the scientific content of the seminar.
