Understanding Anomie
‘Basic Diyala’ delves into Durkheim’s sociology and analyses suicide and its relationship to family breakdown in a specialised scientific symposium
The Faculty of Basic Education at the University of Diyala – Guidance Unit, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Division and the Media and Government Communication Division, organised an in-depth specialised scientific symposium entitled: “Anomic suicide and its relationship to family breakdown… A Reading of Émile Durkheim’s Sociology.” A number of teachers, students, and researchers in sociology and psychological counselling participated in the seminar.
The seminar, which was moderated by Assistant Professor Jaber Mohammed Jaber and presented by Professor Abdul Razzaq Jadou Mohammed, aimed to diagnose and analyse the phenomenon of suicide from the perspective of French sociologist Emile Durkheim (Anomie), linking it to contemporary social transformations and the family breakdown experienced by society. The seminar sought to raise awareness of this complex phenomenon and provide scientific insights into its prevention.
The seminar included a discussion of several key themes: The first theme presented Durkheim’s sociological concept of anomie (loss of norms and values) and its societal applications. The second topic explained how to analyse the causal relationship between family breakdown, the absence of social ties and suicide rates. The third topic highlighted the role of educational and guidance institutions in rebuilding social cohesion and promoting the mental health of students.
