
Outstanding sporting achievement
Diyala Basic Education students win third place in university volleyball tournament
The Faculty of Basic Education at the University of Diyala achieved a new sporting achievement when its women’s volleyball team won third place in the university tournament organised by the Student Activities Department at the university’s presidency. The championship saw wide participation and fierce competition among representatives from all university departments.
This achievement reflects the advanced level reached by the college’s sports teams and their keenness to actively participate and compete in various university sports forums. Assistant Professor Dr. Mustafa Mahdi Eidan, head of the Student Activities Division, participated in the tournament, along with team supervisors Assistant Professor Samer Hussein Khalifa and Mr. Mohammed Jassim Mohammed, assistant coach Dr. Nourus Najib Ahmed, and a number of female students.
The Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Ayman Abdul Aoun, praised this outstanding participation, emphasising that ‘these positive results reflect the determination and perseverance of our students and the College’s keenness to support all forms of student activities, whether sporting, intellectual or cultural, thereby contributing to the development of well-rounded students.’ The Dean urged the sports teams to exert more effort to achieve higher rankings in the future.
For his part, the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Assistant Professor Dr. Nasir Hamid Karim, expressed his pride in this achievement, noting that “third place in a championship involving all the university’s colleges is the result of hard work and continuous training. We are committed to providing the necessary support to our sports teams and overcoming any obstacles they face to ensure that the faculty is represented honourably in all championships.”
This sporting achievement is in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, and is particularly relevant to the following goals: Goal 3: Good health and well-being: University sports activities contribute directly to promoting the physical and mental health of female students and combating sedentary lifestyles. Goal 4: Quality education: Extracurricular activities such as sports contribute to a comprehensive and balanced educational environment, enhancing the quality of the educational experience for female students. Goal 5: Gender equality: The participation of female students in this tournament reflects the commitment of the university and the faculty to promoting gender equality in activities and opportunities, and supporting the role of women in sports. Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities: Sports activities help build a cohesive and vibrant university community, which has a positive impact on the local community in general.
