
When books and words become a bridge of love
English language students at Diyala University excel in their first exceptional initiative to welcome their new colleagues
In an atmosphere filled with love, happiness, a spirit of cooperation and a high sense of responsibility, second-year students in the morning programme at the English Department of the Faculty of Basic Education organised a unique student initiative to welcome first-year students, with the aim of strengthening the spirit of belonging and support within the department. With the participation of a number of teachers and students and in coordination with the Media and Government Communication Division
The initiative included second-year students wrapping the books they used in their first year, in a symbolic gesture reflecting their keenness to support their new colleagues and provide them with a comprehensive educational experience. They also decorated the free wall with motivational welcome messages that added warmth and positivity to the department’s corridors, in addition to offering simple hospitality to new students, in a sincere expression of hospitality and the spirit of family within the department.
The activity was supervised by Prof. Haifa Abdulkhaliq , Head of the Department, and Ms. Fatima Jamal Saadallah, Morning Study Coordinator. The Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Ayman Abdul Aoun, expressed his admiration for the initiative and considered it a model to be emulated in student interaction and spirit of responsibility. First-year students also expressed their great happiness with this unique initiative, emphasising that such initiatives strengthen their sense of belonging and encourage them to interact positively with their colleagues and professors.
In her speech during the ceremony, the department chair emphasised that the initiative reflects the students’ cultural and professional awareness and their high sense of responsibility towards their peers, stressing that such initiatives are part of the comprehensive educational experience that the department seeks to instil in every student.
This initiative is in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, in particular: Goal 4: Quality Education, by promoting an interactive and stimulating learning environment. Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, by creating a positive atmosphere that supports students’ mental health. Goal 18: Partnerships for the Goals, by encouraging student initiatives that promote interaction and collaboration among students.
