A specialised scientific symposium at Diyala University sounds the alarm on environmental issues and analyses the impact of climate change on soil fertility
On the occasion of World Soil Day, the Faculty of Basic Education at the University of Diyala, in cooperation with the Diyala Environment Directorate and in coordination with the Continuing Education Division and the Media and Government Communication Division, organised a specialised scientific seminar entitled: ‘The impact of climate change on soil fertility and its implications for agricultural resources’.
The seminar witnessed the participation of a number of teachers, students and those interested in environmental and agricultural issues.
The workshop, which was moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Ibrahim Hussein and presented by Chief Engineer Youssef Saadi Abbas and Assistant Chief Engineer Alia Fadel Jabbar, aimed to clarify the profound impact of climate change on the physical and chemical properties of soil and the negative effects on agricultural production and food security. It also sought to raise environmental awareness among students and the community and discuss the solutions and measures needed to support cooperation between academic and environmental institutions in addressing climate challenges.
The symposium included discussions on several key topics: The first topic presented a detailed overview of climate change and its impact on soil fertility and its reflection on agricultural resources and livelihoods. The second topic reviewed sustainable soil management strategies in the context of climate change and the role of academic and environmental institutions in addressing challenges.
